The Lenoir County Board of Education seated four members – one new member and three who were re-elected – during its Monday night meeting, its first since the November elections.
After his swearing in by Lenoir County Clerk of Court Dawn Stroud, Elijah Woods of Kinston (pictured) took the District 4 chair occupied since 2005 by Garland Nobles, who did not run for re-election. Woods handily won his race for a four-year term on the board.
Also sworn in were re-elected members Jon Sargeant of Kinston, who represents District 3, and at-large representatives Bruce Hill and Merwyn Smith, both of Kinston. All three ran unopposed in November.
Board members re-elected Sargeant as board chair and Hill as vice chair. Sargeant and Smith are beginning their second term and Hill, the dean of the school board after Nobles stepped down, is in his fourth term.
Rounding out the seven-man board are District 1 member Billy Davis of Kinston, District 2 member Keith King of La Grange and District 5 member W.D. Anderson of Kinston. All have two years remaining on their current terms.
