Five moments (among many) that defined 2016 for LCPS

2016 was full of memorable moments. After all, hardly a school day goes by without something extraordinary, unexpected or just plain odd happening. Still, some moments are bigger than others. In fact, five could be isolated as those that defined LCPS's year -- and a pretty good year it was.

The five are:

-- The promotion of Brent Williams to district superintendent and the personnel changes that put his leadership team in place.

-- The floods spawned by Hurricane Matthew, which brought a lot of pain but also brought the good out in people.

-- An improvement in test scores that we think affirms the direction the district is moving in terms of instruction and teacher support.

-- The aggressive pursuit of grants that paid off big in 2016.

-- The partnership with Teach for America that allowed LCPS to offer its first program of summer instruction in a long while.
